Lagos Traffic Authority Reports 256 Road Casualties in First Half of 2024

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reported 256 road casualties across the state from January to June 2024. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, confirmed this in a statement released on Sunday.

During this period, LASTMA recorded 256 casualties, alongside the impoundment of 9,370 vehicles for various traffic violations. These included 3,034 private vehicles, 1,849 cars, 549 buses, and 636 Sports Utility Vehicles, among others.

Reflecting on the challenges faced, Bakare-Oki highlighted the agency’s efforts in personnel training, with 2,000 staff members trained both internally and externally. He noted, “In the last six months, we have navigated through a mix of challenges, addressing them through rigorous training and retraining programs.”

Bakare-Oki also emphasized LASTMA’s ongoing efforts to ensure orderliness on Lagos roads, particularly in congested areas like the Apapa Port route, Iyana-Ipaja, Idumota, Apogbon, CMS, and Lekki-Ajah. He acknowledged significant progress in enforcing traffic regulations across the state’s five divisions, aiming to enhance travel efficiency for residents, especially during peak hours.

Furthermore, Bakare-Oki assured Lagos motorists of LASTMA’s commitment to continually improve traffic management. He highlighted the deployment of over 2,000 pieces of traffic equipment and urged compliance with traffic laws and respect for traffic officers to foster safer road usage in the state.
