A policeman was killed by a stray bullet on Wednesday while on duty in the Terminus area of Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Reports indicate that a team of policemen encountered resistance from hoodlums defying a state government order to vacate the busy neighborhood to ensure the free flow of traffic. Despite repeated warnings, the hoodlums continued to display goods, mainly second-hand clothes and bags, on the road.

The Joint Task Force, comprising personnel from the Police, DSS, NSCDC, Immigration, FRSC, and Operation Rainbow, faced resistance while attempting to clear the area. During the confrontation, warning shots were fired to disperse the mob, but one bullet struck and killed Inspector Emmanuel Tanko, who was on special duty in Plateau State.

State Police Command spokesman, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident, stating, “An officer from one of the sister agencies fired a warning shot, but unfortunately, Inspector Emmanuel Tanko was hit and died on the spot.” The officer responsible was arrested and is under investigation at the State CID Jos, while Tanko’s body was taken to Bingham University Teaching Hospital for an autopsy.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Adesina, visited the scene and extended condolences to Tanko’s family and the Nigeria Police Force. He urged the public to cooperate with security agencies as they carry out their lawful duties for the benefit of all citizens.
