SSANU Issues Two-Week Ultimatum to Taraba Govt, TSU Management Over Unfulfilled Agreements
The Taraba State University (TSU) chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a two-week ultimatum to Governor Agbu Kefas and the university management to address unresolved issues outlined in a Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed earlier this year — or face an indefinite strike.
The warning was contained in a communiqué released at the end of the union’s congress, and jointly signed by SSANU Chairperson Comrade Bitrus Joseph Ajibauka and Secretary Mamki Joshua Atein.
The union accused the state government of breaching the terms of the MoA reached on January 25, 2025, which included a commitment to meet with SSANU leaders in early February to develop a concrete payment plan for outstanding financial obligations.
Describing the delay as a “clear violation” of the agreement, the union warned that it may be forced to resume the strike it had suspended on January 26, 2025, after more than a month of industrial action.
Among SSANU’s key demands are:
-
Full payment of outstanding salaries for September and October 2022
-
Settlement of withheld portions of June, November, and December 2022 salaries
-
Payment of 90% of accumulated Earned Administrative Allowances (EAA)
-
Implementation of the approved State-Defined Pension Scheme for TSU staff, including benefits for deceased and retired workers
The communiqué also revealed that the union had sent a reminder letter to the state government on February 14, 2025, which has gone unanswered.
“The inaction of the Taraba State government and the university management is a clear breach of the MoA. Failure to meet our demands within two weeks from August 7 will leave the union with no choice but to resume the earlier suspended strike,” the statement warned.
SSANU emphasized that any action taken after the expiration of the ultimatum will be “in line with its constitution and extant laws.”
