The Lagos State Government has announced a 15-day temporary closure of the Marine Bridge in Ijora, Apapa Local Government Area, to allow for critical maintenance work by the Federal Ministry of Works.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the bridge will be shut down from Saturday, October 11 to Saturday, October 25, 2025.

To minimize traffic disruption, the repair project will be carried out in two phases.

Phase I: October 11–18

This phase will affect the section of the bridge from Lawani Oguntayo Road (by UBA, inbound Apapa/Costain).
During this time, motorists coming from Ijora Olopa toward Apapa will be diverted through the Ijora Causeway Access Ramp near Omni Retail Company, connect to Ijora 7up, and then turn left to rejoin traffic via the Lilypond Access Ramp.

Phase II: October 19–25

This will cover the stretch between Ijora Badia and the Lilypond Access Ramp (inbound Apapa).
Drivers coming from Ijora Olopa towards Apapa and Costain will be diverted about 50 metres before the construction zone into a contraflow lane, sharing the road with Costain-bound vehicles for approximately 500 metres, before merging back onto the main road.

Vehicles heading from Apapa toward Costain, Lagos Island, or Ijora Olopa will still be allowed through, but must also briefly share the 500-metre contraflow segment near the repair area.

Osiyemi appealed to road users for patience and cooperation, noting that the maintenance is necessary to replace the bridge’s structural bearings, which are vital to its safety and longevity.

“While the closure may cause temporary inconvenience, it is a necessary step to ensure the long-term durability of the Marine Bridge,” Osiyemi said. “We are working closely with the Federal Government to improve road infrastructure and ensure safer journeys for all.”

He added that traffic management officers will be deployed to all diversion points to assist with navigation and help ease congestion throughout the repair period.
