2027: We won’t be passive anymore, we’ll reject underperforming politicians – Ohanaeze
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has pledged to adopt a more politically assertive stance ahead of the 2027 general elections, vowing to support only leaders who have made a positive impact on their communities.
Chief Chukwuemeka Egwuonwu, the Cross River State President of the group, made this announcement during a reception held in his honor on Monday in Calabar.
Egwuonwu emphasized that the era of political passivity was over, and from now on, the organization will judge politicians based on their performance and integrity.
“Every human being is a political animal, and Ohanaeze will not be an exception. Those who deliver will receive our blessings, but if anyone is found to exploit the people and cause hardship, we will speak out,” he said.
He also praised Governor Bassey Otu for his inclusive leadership style that benefits even non-indigenes, describing his administration as people-oriented and fair.
In his remarks, Senator John Mbata, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, encouraged the new Cross River executive to promote unity and uphold the values of pride, purpose, and cultural preservation.
Mbata further stated that the national body is working to reposition Ohanaeze as a global voice and unifying force for the Igbo people both at home and abroad.
Governor Otu, who was present at the event, commended the Igbo community for their significant contributions to commerce and development in Cross River State, assuring them of ongoing collaboration.
Egwuonwu, who recently took over leadership from the previous executive, pledged to unite members and broaden Ohanaeze’s influence throughout the state.
