The Abia State Executive Council has approved the comprehensive renovation and upgrading of the Ojukwu Bunker and the National War Museum—two historic civil war landmarks located in Umuahia, the state capital.

The approval was granted on Monday during the council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said the renovation would reposition both sites as rich historical and tourism assets for Abia State and Nigeria. He noted that upgrading the monuments would help preserve the state’s heritage while boosting tourism potential.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Mathew Ekwuribe, disclosed that the state government would, within one month, conclude all memoranda of agreement with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments and the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy to advance the projects.

Meanwhile, the state government announced that 119,438 additional persons have enrolled in the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme, bringing the total number of residents captured under both the state and national health insurance programmes to 217,000.

It further stated that there are currently no outbreaks of Lassa fever, yellow fever, cholera, Mpox, diphtheria, or any other public-health-related disease in the state.
