The Abia State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has resolved to combat the growing issue of quackery and impersonation within the journalism profession in the state.

In a communiqué issued after its monthly Congress, the NUJ stated that, in line with directives from the Union’s National Secretariat, anyone found parading as a journalist without proper licensing, in violation of the Nigeria Press Council Act, will face legal consequences.

The statement, jointly signed by NUJ Abia Chairman Chidi Asonye and Secretary Ikechukwu Onuegbu, also called on the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) and residents to urgently clear blocked drainages across the state to prevent flooding during the rainy season.

Addressing public safety, the NUJ urged the state government to construct speed breakers and a roundabout at Sign Board Junction along the recently reconstructed Umuahia–Uzuakoli Road to reduce the frequent accidents at the location. Tricycle operators were also advised to avoid reckless driving to save lives.

On civil service matters, the Congress demanded the conclusion of the suspended promotion exercise for Abia State civil servants, noting that many have gone over six years without advancement.

The journalists also raised concerns about alleged corrupt practices by some internal revenue officers, who reportedly collect cash payments from traders with sealed shops without issuing receipts, contrary to state government policy requiring payments be made through designated banks. The NUJ called for tighter monitoring of these activities.

Commending the state government, the Congress lauded the launch of integrated solar power and public water rehabilitation projects, which they said will improve hygiene and public health. They urged the government to ensure the new facilities are protected from vandalism.

Finally, the NUJ urged Governor Alex Otti to investigate allegations within the Ministry of Finance and other MDAs concerning salary underpayment, unexplained deductions, wage delays, and non-implementation of the new minimum wage, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in public administration.
