Aisha Yesufu, prominent activist and co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement, has revealed that security personnel at the National Assembly allegedly demanded the presence of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s husband before allowing her access to her office.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, resumed her legislative duties on Tuesday after being suspended for six months over allegations involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Her office was formally reopened by the sergeant-at-arms, marking her official return to the Senate.

However, Yesufu took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to criticize the treatment of the senator by National Assembly security.

“Yesterday, the security at the National Assembly were insisting that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s husband has to be around before she will be allowed in,” Yesufu wrote.

“They claimed it was the instruction given to them. I asked whether they ever requested the wives of male senators before granting them entry. The level of disrespect women face in this country is astonishing.

“You’re asking a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to bring her husband before opening the gate? Kai!”

Despite the initial confrontation, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was eventually granted access and addressed the media from her office.

The incident has sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians condemning what they see as a blatant display of sexism and institutional disrespect toward a serving female lawmaker.
