Akpabio Pays Tribute to Late Super Eagles Goalkeeper Peter Rufai
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has mourned the passing of Peter Rufai, describing him as “simply unbeatable” and one of Nigeria’s greatest football legends.
In a statement on Friday, Akpabio recalled Rufai’s early days at Stationery Stores FC in Lagos, where his exceptional talent thrilled local fans. He also praised Rufai’s accomplishments at both national and international levels, noting his tenure with top European clubs and his widely respected nickname, “Dodo Mayana.”
Akpabio highlighted Rufai’s critical role as Nigeria’s goalkeeper in the 1990s, particularly during the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, calling his performances “outstanding.”
Expressing deep sorrow over the loss, Akpabio extended heartfelt condolences to Rufai’s family, the Nigerian Football Federation, and football fans nationwide.
“On behalf of my family, constituents, the Senate, and the entire National Assembly, I offer my deepest sympathy. May God grant him eternal rest,” Akpabio stated.
Peter Rufai passed away in Lagos early Thursday after a brief illness at the age of 61.
