ASUU Strike

ASUU, along with the NLC and TUC, has decided to participate in the current strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to meet their minimum wage demands.

ASUU’s President, Emmanuel Osodeke, has instructed all university lecturers nationwide to support the strike initiated by the NLC.

The decision was made following the government’s inability to finalize negotiations on minimum wage for workers and reduce electricity tariffs.

We urge all our branches to unite and participate in the strike as a member of Congress. Therefore, branch leaders must rally all members to join the strike.

We stand together in this fight. Remember that ASUU was considering a strike due to the government’s neglect in appointing Governing Councils for Federal Universities.

The union criticized the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government for its lackadaisical approach towards academic issues in Nigerian Federal Universities.

During a press conference at the University of Abuja, the union also expressed disapproval of the 35 per cent salary increase for professors and the 25 per cent salary increase for other academics in the university system, viewing it as a temporary wage boost that could be revoked by the government at any moment.

According to a report by NIGERIA NEWS 247, the National Universities Commission recently declared the dissolution of the governing councils of federal universities and other agencies in Nigeria on June 22, 2023.

This directive from the NUC followed a previous order by President Bola Tinubu to dissolve boards across government parastatals, agencies, and companies.

In response to this development, the NUC has decided to align with a strike led by the NLC and may persist even after the government resolves issues related to minimum wage with striking unions.
