Biafra: BRGIE Tells South-East Governors They Lack Legitimacy to Negotiate for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
The Simon Ekpa-led Biafran Republic Government in-Exile (BRGIE) has sternly cautioned South-East governors and other regional leaders against involving themselves in negotiations for the declaration of Biafra or the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu with the Nigerian government.
In a statement issued on Sunday via his official X handle, Ekpa, recognized as the Prime Minister of BRGIE, emphasized that only BRGIE possesses the legitimate authority to advocate for Kanu’s release and the declaration of Biafra. He criticized South-East governors, lawmakers, and other groups from the region, including the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, for their recent calls to secure Kanu’s release as a means to achieve peace in the region.
Ekpa warned that those purporting to negotiate for Kanu’s release were undermining the cause of Biafra’s liberation. He stated, “Self-serving politicians and traditional rulers who now advocate negotiation with Nigeria after hindering Biafra’s liberation are warned to desist from further interference.”
Asserting BRGIE’s exclusive mandate in such matters, Ekpa declared, “We will not tolerate any further negotiations starting tonight. Biafra Republic Government In Exile remains the sole legitimate authority for such negotiations. Those individuals promoting negotiations should refrain. Biafrans are resolute.”
Recent discussions on Kanu’s release gained momentum after South-East governors convened in Enugu State last week. Governor Hope Uzodinma, in a communique following the July 3, 2024 meeting, announced plans to engage President Bola Tinubu to secure Kanu’s release.
Ekpa had previously urged the Nigerian government in May to seek mediation from Finland to resolve conflicts in the region.
