BREAKING: NLC Accuses Tinubu of Betrayal Amid Fuel Price Increase
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused President Bola Tinubu of betrayal following a recent significant increase in fuel prices. In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the Congress expressed shock and dismay at what it described as a covert rise in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), labeling it a “deep sense of betrayal.”
The NLC highlighted that one of the reasons for agreeing to the N70,000 national minimum wage was the assurance that the PMS price would remain unchanged.
The Congress criticized the government for breaking its promises and implementing what it termed “harsh right-wing market policies,” which have worsened the economic conditions for Nigerians.
The NLC also condemned the government’s actions against protesters, including arrests and detentions based on alleged false charges, and encroachments on the duties of the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
The statement read, “We are deeply betrayed by the federal government’s covert increase in the pump price of PMS. The assurance that the price of PMS would not rise was a key reason for accepting the N70,000 minimum wage, despite it being insufficient.”
The Congress demanded the immediate reversal of the fuel price hike, the release of detained protesters, an end to arbitrary arrests and detentions, a reversal of the 250% electricity tariff increase, cessation of encroachments on the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s responsibilities, and a halt to policies causing hunger and insecurity.
The NLC vowed to remain steadfast with the people and warned that decisive actions would be announced in the coming days.
“Appropriate decisions will be made public after meetings of the Congress’s relevant bodies in the coming days,” the statement concluded.
