The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday advanced a bill that would impose a 10-year international passport ban on Nigerians convicted of crimes overseas.

Key Details:
The proposed legislation, sponsored by Senator Abubakar Bello (Niger North), aims to amend the Passport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act. According to Channels TV, the bill is part of broader efforts to restore Nigeria’s global image and curb the abuse of the country’s travel documents.

During the debate, Senator Onawo Ogwoshi (Nasarawa South), speaking on behalf of the sponsor, described the bill as both urgent and necessary.

“This measure is not only punitive but also deterrent,” Ogwoshi stated. “It will discourage criminal acts that tarnish the reputation of Nigerian citizens and devalue our passport in the eyes of the world.”

“Innocent and patriotic Nigerians suffer visa denials, airport harassment, and constant suspicion—solely because of the actions of a few,” he said. “The green passport, once a symbol of pride, is now widely disrespected. That is nothing short of a national emergency.”

Under the proposed amendment, any Nigerian convicted abroad would have their passport withdrawn for 10 years after completing their sentence in the foreign country.

Supporters of the bill argued that it would serve as a clear statement of Nigeria’s commitment to accountability and help rebuild trust with international partners.
