COAS, Waidi Shaibu Announces Recruitment of 24,000 New Soldiers
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has unveiled plans to recruit and train 24,000 new soldiers as part of efforts to strengthen the Nigerian Army’s operational capacity amid escalating security challenges.
The development was disclosed on Wednesday in a post on X by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama.
According to the report, General Shaibu announced the initiative during an operational visit to the Nigerian Army’s 1 Division in Kaduna, where he addressed officers from the ranks of second lieutenant to lieutenant colonel.
He explained that the recruitment drive forms part of a broader strategy to enhance the Army’s readiness and expand its manpower for nationwide deployments. Shaibu revealed that three new training facilities approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will train 12,000 soldiers within six months, with the potential to increase the intake to 24,000 if the centres operate two training streams simultaneously.
The COAS said the facilities are strategically located to produce well-prepared recruits equipped with modern warfare skills, tactical proficiency, and advanced weapon-handling capabilities. He emphasized that the initiative aims not only to boost troop numbers but also to ensure that personnel receive high-quality training.
Shaibu added that the recruits will undergo instruction in basic tactics, combat operations, and leadership to reinforce the Army’s professional standards.
Reaffirming the Army’s commitment to its “Soldier First” philosophy, he pledged improved welfare and support for both new and serving personnel. He also encouraged senior officers to mentor incoming recruits to uphold discipline, core values, and operational excellence.
The recruitment effort is expected to significantly enhance manpower, strengthen troop deployment in critical areas, and improve the Army’s ability to respond to security threats across the country.
During his visit, General Shaibu also engaged officers in discussions on operational logistics, welfare reforms, and ongoing initiatives to boost the Army’s capabilities in the North West and other operational zones.
