Counter-Terrorism Chief Urges Stricter Drug Regulation to Combat Insurgency
The National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, has urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to tighten the regulation of drug manufacturing, importation, and distribution. He emphasized that the agency’s role is critical in combating terrorism and organized crime in the country.
Laka made this statement in Abuja on Thursday during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations. He highlighted that by controlling the circulation of drugs, chemicals, and other controlled products, NAFDAC helps curb the illegal drug trade, which often finances terrorism.
He also commended NAFDAC’s efforts in regulating chemicals used in the production of explosives by non-state actors. Laka called for stronger cooperation between stakeholders to disrupt illicit networks and cut off the financing sources of criminals.
NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, added that the MoU would contribute to reducing deaths and protecting young people from drug abuse, which she noted alters the mind. She reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to working with the NCTC to prevent substance abuse.
