Customs Debunks Viral Shooting Video, Says Incident Happened in 2019
The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has clarified that a video currently circulating on social media, allegedly showing its operatives involved in a shooting incident, is not recent but dates back to February 2019.
In a statement released on Tuesday, NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada confirmed that the incident occurred on Sunday, February 17, 2019, at the Shagamu Interchange in Ogun State—contrary to claims suggesting it was a recent event.
“The NCS wishes to categorically state that the incident in question occurred on Sunday, 17 February 2019, and is not a recent development, as portrayed by some online platforms,” the statement read.
The Service emphasized that it had taken prompt action at the time to address the incident in accordance with its internal disciplinary procedures.
“A public statement was issued at the time, and a disciplinary panel was established to investigate the matter thoroughly. At the end of the process, appropriate sanctions were applied, including the dismissal of the officers found culpable,” the statement added.
The NCS urged the public to verify information before spreading it and warned against the misrepresentation of events, particularly those that can stir public anxiety.
