EFCC Identifies Political Fraud as Root Cause of Economic Hardship and Insecurity
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has attributed Nigeria’s ongoing economic and security crises to widespread corruption and the embezzlement of public funds by dishonest politicians.
EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukayode, made this known on Wednesday during the annual conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria, held in Delta State. He was represented at the event by Mr. Williams Oseghale, Assistant Commander and Head of Public Affairs at the Commission’s Benin Zonal Directorate.
Delivering the keynote address, Olukayode emphasized that corruption lies at the root of many of the country’s socio-economic problems and called on citizens to embrace transparency and accountability as a national ethic.
“Every challenge surrounding Nigeria’s socio-economic development today can be traced to the consequences of corruption,” he said.
He listed issues such as unemployment, insecurity, poverty, hunger, disease, low life expectancy, and kidnappings as direct outcomes of the mismanagement, misapplication, and embezzlement of public resources by those entrusted with national leadership.
The EFCC chairman stressed that good governance is only achievable when citizens actively play their roles in holding leaders accountable and promoting a culture of integrity.
