The leadership of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) branch, has threatened industrial action following the assault of two doctors by students involved in a recent accident.

Speaking to journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, the EKSUTH NARD President, Dr. Ayodeji Olatayo, condemned the attack as “barbaric and unacceptable,” demanding that the Ekiti State Government identify and apprehend the culprits by 6:00 p.m. on Monday or risk a strike.

He stressed that health workers deserve respect and warned that further acts of violence against medical personnel would no longer be tolerated.

Also addressing the press, former NARD President and Chairman of the EKSUTH Inter-Allied Forum, Dr. Adeyemi Famous, called for the enactment of a law criminalizing attacks on healthcare workers.

“It’s high time patients and their relatives stopped attacking doctors,” Dr. Famous said. “This is not the first time such incidents are occurring. A few weeks ago, some of our members were also assaulted. The Ekiti State House of Assembly must urgently pass legislation to ensure perpetrators face the full weight of the law.”

He urged security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible, emphasizing that the union will not stand by while its members are subjected to violence and disrespect.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, when a group of students involved in a road accident were rushed to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit. In a fit of rage over perceived delays in treatment, they assaulted two doctors, leaving them injured.
