The Federal Government has issued a travel alert for Nigerian citizens in the United Kingdom due to increased violence and unrest following recent riots. The alert, released on Monday and signed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ambassador Eche Abu-Ode, advises caution in light of the recent turmoil.

According to Reuters, violent protests erupted across Britain after a tragic knife attack at a children’s dance class in Southport last Monday, which resulted in the deaths of three girls and injuries to ten others. Misinformation suggesting the attacker was an immigrant and radical Islamist has fueled further unrest, though police have clarified that the suspect was born in Britain and the incident is not being treated as terrorism.

The government has urged citizens to avoid political processions, protests, rallies, and large gatherings. They are also advised to stay away from crowded areas and remain vigilant.

“Citizens are advised to be extra cautious and take preventive measures including avoiding political processions, protests, rallies, and large gatherings. Maintain vigilance and self-awareness at all times.”

For assistance, the Ministry encourages citizens to contact the Nigerian High Commission in the UK via email (hc@nigeriahc.org.uk) or phone (+442078391244).
