Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has announced his administration’s commitment to eradicate open defecation by 2030, aligning with the United Nations’ sixth sustainable development goal.

During an event at Okigwe Park in Umuahia on Wednesday, where he inaugurated integrated sanitation and toilet facilities for public use, Otti emphasized the importance of providing alternatives to open defecation while promoting sanitation.

The governor highlighted that ongoing projects across the state aim to significantly improve hygiene and public health for residents. “This initiative is crucial, as one cannot advocate for sanitation or prohibit open defecation without offering viable alternatives,” he stated.

He noted that the project utilizes renewable energy and is designed to provide free public water access to the community.

Additionally, on Wednesday, Governor Otti inaugurated solar power systems at the Abia State Specialist Hospital in Umuahia and launched efforts to revive the Aba water scheme.
