House of Representatives Threatens to Demand Removal of NNPCL CEO Kyari Over Dangote Refinery Issue
The House of Representatives has threatened to call for the removal of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), if the alleged efforts to undermine the Dangote Refinery do not cease immediately.
Deputy spokesperson Philip Agbese made this statement during a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday. He highlighted that the lawmakers had already called for the removal of the leadership of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), accusing both NNPCL and NMDPRA of actively working against the Dangote Refinery.
Agbese noted that while many Nigerians have canceled planned protests due to the ongoing situation, they now demand Kyari’s dismissal if it will ensure the refinery’s smooth operation. He emphasized that the House intends to investigate the conflict between Dangote Refinery and NMDPRA to safeguard national assets and critical economic infrastructure.
“The House has observed a series of efforts to discredit the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, leading to widespread panic,” Agbese said. “We have previously urged the President to dismiss the NMDPRA’s CEO, and we will not hesitate to demand Mele Kyari’s removal if the attacks on this vital national asset continue.”
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas had earlier led a delegation to visit the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals Company in Lagos, which provided valuable insights for shaping the House’s legislative actions. Abbas reiterated the House’s commitment to fostering a more business-friendly environment to attract both local and international investors.
