Imo Govt Regulates Textbooks, Bans Nursery Graduation Ceremonies, others
The Imo State Government, through its Ministry of Education, has announced new policies that ban the annual introduction of new textbooks for pupils in both public and private schools across the state. Additionally, the practice of organizing graduation ceremonies for nursery and Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3 students has been discontinued.
The policies were disclosed in a press statement by Bernard Ikegwuoha, the Commissioner for Education.
According to Ikegwuoha, the new measures aim to reduce the financial strain on parents while refocusing attention on academics.
Under the new rules, private and faith-based schools are now required to use approved textbooks for a minimum of four years, preventing annual changes.
Graduation ceremonies will only be permitted for Primary 6 and Senior Secondary School (SSS) 3 students, in line with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system.
The Commissioner emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to delivering quality and functional education, while discouraging unnecessary expenses.
“The four-year textbook cycle will enable siblings to share books across academic sessions, helping families save money and ensuring a stable learning environment,” Ikegwuoha explained.
He added, “Proprietors must adhere to the approved textbook list to maintain consistency and reduce costs. These initiatives demonstrate the State Government’s commitment to a financially sustainable and academically focused education system. By eliminating excessive ceremonies and limiting textbook turnover, we aim to support parents and foster a conducive atmosphere for student success.”
