Jonathan Reveals Why there are abandoned projects in Niger-Delta

Former President Nigeria has attributed the widespread issue of abandoned development projects in the Niger Delta to the frequent leadership changes within the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Speaking during a plenary session at the NDDC’s 25th anniversary celebration in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Jonathan emphasized the need for leadership continuity within the Commission to ensure project completion and sustainable development.

He argued that the constant turnover of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) at the NDDC has disrupted long-term planning and hindered meaningful progress. “The projects were not abandoned intentionally by NDDC managers, but rather due to the instability caused by frequent leadership changes,” he said.

Jonathan highlighted that in its 25-year history, the NDDC has had 11 different CEOs—each serving an average of just over two years. “The question is: how can one plan or complete significant projects for the region within two years and three months?” he asked.

The former president further noted that with inadequate time for strategic planning, the Commission often resorts to contractor-driven initiatives instead of implementing well-structured development plans.

Jonathan praised President Bola Tinubu for retaining Dr. Samuel Ogbuku as the current Managing Director of the NDDC, describing the move as a sign of genuine commitment to the region’s development. Ogbuku was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2022 and officially assumed office in January 2023.

“If President Tinubu was not serious about developing the Niger Delta, he would have replaced Ogbuku immediately after assuming office in May 2023. But he retained him, and now people are seeing results,” Jonathan said.

He recalled the lasting impact of past NDDC leaders like Onyema Ugochukwu and Timi Alaibe, noting that their longer tenures allowed them to make meaningful contributions.
