Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Kingsley Moghalu, has issued a stark warning about the future of democracy in Nigeria. He expressed concerns that the country’s democratic process could face severe challenges if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is not genuinely independent and if electronic transmission and collation of election results are not mandated.

Moghalu shared his concerns in a post on his X handle on Saturday, emphasizing that without these crucial reforms, elections may remain nothing more than a charade, potentially leading to state capture by political parties with the means to manipulate the system.

He stated: “Democracy in Nigeria has a bleak future if @inecnigeria is not truly independent, and if electronic transmission and collation of election results is not made MANDATORY. Otherwise, elections will merely be a charade – a route to state capture by whichever political parties can manage to do so.”
