The Organised Labour Sets May Deadline for New Minimum Wage Implementation

During the 2024 International Workers Day celebration in Abuja, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Joe Ajaero, stressed the urgency for the Federal Government to finalize the implementation process of the new national minimum wage by the end of May.

With the theme “Ensuring Safety and Health at Work in a Changing Climate,” Ajaero emphasized that failure to conclude the negotiation by May’s end could jeopardize industrial peace in Nigeria.

Ajaero highlighted that negotiations for the new minimum wage, currently set at N615,000, have been ongoing with active participation from all stakeholders. However, he emphasized the need for automatic wage adjustments in the event of inflation exceeding 7.5%.

Additionally, Ajaero called for strict compliance mechanisms to ensure that all employers, including those with fewer than five workers, adhere to the new minimum wage standards. He stressed that Nigerian workers deserve a wage that reflects a living wage and urged the government to act swiftly to meet this demand.
