The Lagos State Government has defended the recent demolitions at the Trade Fair Complex, insisting that the operation was fully supported by state laws.

The demolition, which primarily affected properties owned by South-Eastern traders, has sparked widespread controversy and condemnation across Nigeria. Critics, including prominent figures from the South-East, have accused the government of targeting Igbo traders.

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, condemned the demolitions on Monday, labeling them illegal and outside the jurisdiction of Lagos State. Speaking on Channels TV, he said, “The country is governed by laws and the constitution. I’m disappointed that the Commissioner for Physical Planning in Lagos State came on air to justify an illegal action.”

In response, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, maintained that the demolitions were lawful. He referenced similar actions by South-East governors Alex Otti of Abia State and Charles Soludo of Anambra State, who had also removed contraventions within their states.

Wahab took to his official X account to state: “When it comes to Lagos State, every Tom, Dick, and Harry has an opinion. Was it illegal when Gov. @alexottiofr removed contraventions in Abia State? Was it also illegal when Gov. @CCSoludo removed contraventions in Anambra? Here in Lagos, every one of our actions is backed by law, and we stand by them all. We remain committed to enforcing the laws without distraction, irrespective of whose ox is gored.”
