Lawmakers to Review Local Government Accounts as Plenary Resumes – Udom
The 10th Senate is scheduled to resume plenary sessions on October 7, with lawmakers poised to address critical national matters, including the much-debated issue of local government autonomy.
Jackson Udom, Special Assistant on Media to the Senate President, outlined these priorities in a statement released on Sunday.
Among the top agenda items are the 2026 Appropriation Bill, electoral reforms, constitutional review, security challenges, and economic growth.
“Once plenary resumes, lawmakers are expected to provide legislative backing for the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy. This will guarantee both administrative and financial independence for councils nationwide,” Udom said.
He highlighted that despite the landmark judgement, many governors continue to control council funds via joint accounts, undermining true autonomy.
Udom also emphasized the Senate’s focus on the 2026 Appropriation Bill, expected to be presented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before year-end.
“The budget will aim to tackle pressing issues such as inflation, unemployment, and insecurity,” he added.
Other priority areas include constitutional amendments, electoral reforms, and initiatives to enhance national security and maintain peace.
Udom reaffirmed the Senate leadership’s commitment to rigorous legislative oversight to promote transparency and accountability in governance.
