Minimum Wage: State Governors Battle Ready for NEC Meeting

Prior to the upcoming discussions on Thursday regarding the National Minimum Wage for workers, the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has affirmed its dedication to supporting the workforce of the nation.

Emerging from their early morning session on Thursday, the Forum released a statement signed by its Chairman, AbdulRazaq AbdulRahman, the Governor of Kwara State.

They affirmed their commitment to ongoing discussions with important parties in order to find a solution that is acceptable to all involved.

The 7th in-person gathering of the 36 State Governors of Nigeria is currently underway, with a primary focus on two critical topics.

The contentious issues of the new National Minimum Wage and Local Government autonomy are taking center stage.

The debate surrounding the National Minimum Wage remains intense, particularly following concerns raised by the Governors regarding the proposed N62,000 amount put forth by the Federal Government and Organised Private Sector during discussions at the Tripartite Committee.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to continuing discussions despite Organised Labour’s rejection of the N62,000 offer, leading to a forthcoming extensive meeting of the National Economic Council.

The issue of Local Government autonomy has sparked a fervent national discussion and was a focal point during the Governors meeting.

Additionally, Minister of Women Affairs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye presented the World Bank Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up at the Forum, with members highlighting its significance and urging implementation at the local level.
