Minister of Blue Economy Launches Plan to End Nigeria’s Fish Import Dependence
The Minister of Blue Economy has revealed an ambitious strategy designed to eliminate Nigeria’s reliance on imported fish by significantly boosting local fish production. This comprehensive plan aims to revitalize the country’s aquaculture and fisheries sectors through increased investment, upgraded infrastructure, and the integration of modern technologies.
By promoting sustainable fish farming practices and empowering local fishermen, the government intends to meet the rising domestic demand while positioning Nigeria as a leading force in Africa’s blue economy. Presently, Nigeria imports a large quantity of fish to satisfy its population’s needs, which places considerable pressure on foreign exchange reserves.
The Minister highlighted that expanding local fish production will generate employment opportunities, enhance food security, and drive economic growth—particularly benefiting coastal and riverine communities. Key components of the initiative include training programs for fish farmers, provision of affordable farming inputs, and support for value chain improvements to boost product quality and market access.
This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader national agenda to maximize its abundant water resources and marine potential. By curbing fish importation, the government aims to lower consumer costs and foster a self-sustaining food system.
The announcement has been welcomed with optimism by fisheries stakeholders, who view it as a vital step toward sustainable development and economic diversification in Nigeria.
