Mohammad Sanusi Reinstated as Emir of Kano Four Years after Dethronement
He received his letter of appointment from Governor Abba Yusuf on Friday, May 24, 2024.
On Friday, Governor Abba Yusuf presented Sanusi Muhammadu with his letter of appointment, officially reinstating him as the Emir of Kano.
With the authority vested in me by the laws of the Kano Emirate Council from 1984 and 2024, and with the endorsement of the kingmakers, I am delighted to announce that Muhammadu Sanusi II has been reappointed as the Emir of Kano and leader of the Kano Emirate Council, stated the governor.
This decision was made official at a ceremony held at the Government House in Kano, marking his return to power after being dethroned by former governor Abdullahi Ganduje four years ago.
During the ceremony, the governor emphasized the importance of the Emir’s leadership in accordance with Islamic principles.
The Emir’s reappointment for a second term is a testament to his competence, credibility, and popularity. The governor encouraged him to uphold Islamic values and work towards unifying the emirate, promoting harmony among different Islamic sects in the state.
Notable figures such as traditional rulers and dignitaries gathered at the event shortly after Governor Yusuf approved the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024.
The recent legislation has replaced the Kano State Emirates Council Law from 2019 and dissolved the emirate councils established by Ganduje.
This law was utilized by Ganduje to divide the Kano Emirate into five separate entities in December 2019, leading to the removal of Sanusi II on March 9, 2020.
The emirates that were formed under Ganduje’s administration included Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya, in addition to Kano.
During Sanusi’s reinstatement ceremony, Governor Yusuf characterized the actions taken in 2019 as a form of victimization and recounted the events that culminated in the Emir’s return.
We engaged in numerous discussions with the Kingmakers, held extensive talks with the Speaker, and convened with all security leaders. Ultimately, we convened in a chamber where I received the bill that repealed the former law, and we signed the new law repealing all the appointments for merbelire,” the governor said.
He reiterated that their actions were driven by strong beliefs and convictions that the man had been wronged in 2019.
They were all united in their mission to restore justice for the people of the state. Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the legislative body for swiftly passing the bill.
He took the opportunity to extend his humble appreciation to the Speaker and all House members for their unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, demonstrating their dedication to the well-being of state citizens.
Emir Sanusi II, formerly known as Lamido Sanusi, had previously served as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria before ascending to kingship.
