My Church, RCCG Was Divided Over Muslim-Muslim Ticket, Says First Lady Oluremi Tinubu
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has revealed how her local church, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), became divided following her husband Bola Tinubu’s controversial Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket during the 2023 elections.
In her newly released book, The Journey of Grace: Giving Thanks in All Things, published to commemorate her 65th birthday, Mrs. Tinubu shared personal insights into the backlash she experienced within her faith community over the political decision.
She wrote, “All the odds were stacked against us, but we kept moving forward with hope in God, and each campaign was interesting.” She acknowledged that the Muslim-Muslim ticket was unpopular and said her Christian faith did little to ease the tensions it created.
“My being a Christian did not matter. My local Assembly, Redeemed Christian Church of God, was split,” she stated, reflecting on how the political development exposed the diversity of political affiliations within the church.
Recounting a similar experience from her 2011 Senate campaign, the former lawmaker said her attempt to share campaign posters at her church was rebuffed — a moment that made her refrain from mixing politics and worship within that space.
Despite the internal division and personal challenges, the First Lady said she remained steadfast in her faith and continued to worship with the church community.
“I kept attending church, and I thank God I have grown from being a baby to a mature Christian. So the little resentment I witnessed from a few was met with the peace of God,” she wrote.
