The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has expressed concern over the airing of what it described as obscene and profane content on the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality show, assuring that action will be taken in line with existing broadcasting regulations.

The Commission made this known while acknowledging receipt of a formal petition submitted by human rights lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, who called for the ban or restriction of the show’s broadcast in public spaces.

In his petition, dated August 4, 2025, Idam gave the Commission a 30-day ultimatum to ban or restrict the programme, citing its “indecent and morally offensive” content as a violation of the NBC Act of 1999.

Acknowledging the petition, NBC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Pauline Ehusani, who signed the response on behalf of the Commission’s Director-General, confirmed that the complaint had been received and was being treated with the seriousness it deserves.

“Kindly note that our Act is now referred to as the National Broadcasting Commission Act, Cap N11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004,” NBC clarified in its response.

The Commission noted that it shares the petitioner’s concerns and reiterated that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code (6th Edition) expressly prohibits the airing of obscene content. It added that “vital decisions” are already being considered to ensure full compliance with broadcasting standards by all parties involved.

NBC also urged citizens and advocacy groups to take an active role in monitoring media content, especially on social platforms.

“In the same vein, the Commission is tasking you and other well-meaning Nigerians to immediately flag such content as soon as it appears on social media; if flagged enough, such content could be taken down permanently,” the statement said.

The Commission assured the public of its commitment to upholding ethical standards in Nigeria’s broadcasting space.
