The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a directive to all international airlines operating flights into Nigeria, requiring strict enforcement of the $10,000 currency declaration rule for inbound passengers. Under this mandate, travelers carrying amounts exceeding $10,000—or its equivalent in other currencies—must complete the necessary declaration forms before arrival.

This measure is part of the Nigerian government’s ongoing efforts to enhance financial transparency and combat illegal currency inflows that could destabilize the economy. By involving airlines in the enforcement process, the NCAA aims to create an effective barrier against the smuggling of undeclared foreign currency. Passengers who fail to declare amounts above the threshold face penalties, including confiscation of funds and possible legal prosecution under currency control laws.

Airlines and airport officials have been urged to inform and assist passengers in complying with the rule to ensure smooth processing and minimize delays. The directive aligns with international best practices and supports the Central Bank of Nigeria’s initiatives to stabilize the naira and safeguard foreign exchange reserves. Travelers are advised to adhere strictly to the declaration requirements for seamless entry into Nigeria.
