NEMA: Women and Children Most Affected by Flooding in 19 States
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that women and children are the most affected groups in the widespread flooding that has impacted 19 states across Nigeria this year.
According to data released on Friday through NEMA’s dashboard, the five states with the highest number of affected individuals are Imo, Rivers, Abia, Borno, and Kaduna.
The agency revealed that over 165 people have died, 82 are still missing, and approximately 119,791 individuals have been affected by the floods. Additionally, 138 people sustained various injuries, 43,936 have been displaced, 8,594 homes were damaged, and 8,278 farmlands were destroyed.
A breakdown of those affected shows that 53,314 are children, 36,573 are women, 24,600 are men, 5,304 are elderly, and 1,863 are persons with disabilities.
The 19 flood-impacted states include Abia, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ondo, Rivers, and Sokoto.
