Niger Governor Grants Unconditional Pardon to 11 Death Row Inmates
Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has granted an unconditional pardon to 11 death row inmates, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Nasiru Mu’azu, announced on Tuesday.
The inmates were convicted for their involvement in a communal clash between the Gaba and Anfani communities in Lavun Local Government Area, which resulted in loss of lives and property.
Those granted pardon include Mohammed Mohammed, Nana Sheshi, Isah Nmadu, Mohammed Mohammed Ndabida, Abubakar Salihu, Baba Shaba, Adamu Babaminin, Haruna Mohammed, Isah Mohammed, Alhaji Inuwa, Ibrahim Mohammed, and Mohammed Isah.
Mu’azu explained that the pardon followed a thorough review by Governor Bago and the State Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.
“This state pardon is part of ongoing reconciliation efforts aimed at ensuring lasting peace between the communities. Several meetings have been held to resolve outstanding issues,” he said.
The Commissioner encouraged others facing similar situations to submit written petitions for consideration.
He further stated that the Instrument of Pardon was signed on May 28 and has since been officially gazetted.
