Nigeria, Ghana Among Countries Set to Witness Upcoming Lunar Eclipse
Nigeria, along with several other countries across the globe, is set to witness a lunar eclipse on Sunday, September 7. According to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), the eclipse will begin around 8:00 PM Nigerian time and is expected to last for approximately 83 minutes.
Scientists say the phenomenon will be visible across much of Africa, with some areas able to observe the entire eclipse from start to finish. Countries expected to experience the celestial event include Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Benin, Togo, Niger, and Chad.
However, regions in the far west of the continent may miss part of the early penumbral or partial phases, depending on when the Moon rises in those areas.
Experts reassure the public that lunar eclipses are completely safe to view with the naked eye—no special equipment is needed.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are perfectly aligned, with the Earth positioned in the middle. As a result, the Earth casts its shadow on the Moon, often giving it a reddish or coppery glow, commonly referred to as a “blood moon.”
Sky watchers across the region are encouraged to step outside and enjoy the rare celestial show.
