On Monday, Nigeria extended heartfelt sympathies to the Islamic Republic of Iran after a devastating helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan Province on Sunday.

The tragic incident resulted in the loss of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other senior officials, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

The helicopter carrying them crashed in a rugged, wooded area, with poor weather conditions believed to be the cause. Aviation authorities confirmed that the helicopter was completely destroyed in the accident.

63-year-old President Raisi, a prominent leader aligning with conservative and hardline factions in Iranian politics, had served as the head of state for almost three years and was anticipated to seek re-election the following year.

Yet, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed their sympathies regarding the occurrence. The Nigerian government is profoundly saddened by this unfortunate incident, recognizing it as a substantial loss not only for Iran but also for the global community, as stated in the condolence message penned by the ministry’s spokesperson, Eche Abu-Obe.

The Federal Government expressed sincere condolences to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the families of the deceased, and the entire Iranian nation.
