The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to take strict action against airlines that cancel or delay flights without valid reasons.

Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, disclosed this in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

He criticized airline operators who abandon passengers during disruptions, leaving NCAA Consumer Protection officers to manage the resulting chaos. Such conduct, he warned, will no longer be tolerated.

“While we understand the challenges of operating in Nigeria’s unique environment, any airline in business must operate professionally. Don’t always opt for the easy way out,” Achimugu stated. “If not for the passengers who trust you, then at least for your own reputation. Strive to be world-class.”

He added that placing NCAA staff at risk while they step in to support passengers is unacceptable, and emphasized that regulatory violations will attract full sanctions.

“The Federal Government has instructed the NCAA to begin naming and shaming non-compliant airlines,” Achimugu said. “While not all disruptions are within the control of the airlines, operators must still adhere to existing regulations when such incidents occur.”

He confirmed that enforcement measures, including public disclosure of defaulting airlines, will begin immediately, in line with directives from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
