Nigerian Senate to Begin Public Hearing on 1999 Constitution Review in Lagos
Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) has announced that the Senate will commence public hearings on the review of the 1999 Constitution starting today in Lagos.
According to Bamidele, the hearings will provide a platform for in-depth discussions on key national issues, including the proposed creation of 18 additional local government areas, the establishment of state police forces, and broad electoral reforms.
To encourage widespread participation, the Senate has also planned simultaneous hearings across the country’s geopolitical zones, except for the North-West region. The hearing for the North-West has been postponed following the recent death of prominent Kano industrialist and philanthropist Alhaji Aminu Dantata on Saturday.
In a statement released yesterday, Senator Bamidele, who chairs the South-West Zonal Constitution Review Committee, detailed the schedule for the two-day event.
He underscored the importance of the forum as a crucial opportunity for Nigerians to voice their opinions on fundamental issues affecting the country’s governance.
