The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians against selling their personal information, including their National Identification Number (NIN), for as little as N1,500 or N2,000.

In a statement released on Sunday, NIMC spokesperson Kayode Adegoke expressed concern over the increasing trend of data theft, particularly targeting unsuspecting citizens.

The warning comes in response to reports, attributed to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), about a growing scheme where individuals—mainly young Nigerians—offer small sums to obtain personal data from people. This information, once collected, is allegedly sold to fintech companies for about N5,000.

NIMC described the practice as a serious security threat with potentially severe consequences for those who share their data.

“The Commission has observed with deep concern the recent claims regarding Nigerians selling their personal data, including NINs. We emphasize that any individual who willingly shares their personal information, whether directly or through a third party, for financial gain does so at their own risk. NIMC will not be liable for any misuse of such information,” the statement read.

NIMC reminded the public that they have consistently advised citizens not to disclose their NIN or other personal information to unauthorized persons or organizations. The Commission also urged service providers to verify all NINs properly before offering services.

To enhance security and give users more control over their data, NIMC encouraged Nigerians to download the NINAuth App, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The app offers features such as secure access, identity protection, and the ability to manage personal NIN information.
