NLC President Ajaero Urges EFCC to Mobilize Nigerians in Anti-Corruption Fight
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared its full support for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its ongoing efforts to combat corruption in Nigeria.
Speaking at the EFCC’s Walk against Corruption held on Thursday across various states, NLC President Joe Ajaero underscored the urgent need for a robust anti-corruption campaign. “There’s an urgent need for us to fight corruption, and the NLC will throw its weight behind the agency in all fights against corruption,” he stated in Abuja.
Ajaero advised the EFCC to stay vigilant against misinformation to ensure continued support from genuine Nigerians. He also emphasized the importance of uniting Nigerians in the fight against corruption, suggesting that the EFCC should foster connections to create a mass movement.
“Nigerians are united in the fight against corruption. Your agency needs to connect them to enable a mass movement,” Ajaero said.
Referencing Chinua Achebe’s book “The Trouble with Nigeria,” Ajaero likened the corruption problem to “putting the goat and the yam together,” highlighting the certainty of corruption without proper safeguards.
Ajaero stressed the generational nature of the anti-corruption fight, stating, “We have to make sure that this fight is carried to the next generation. It’s a fight we can’t afford to lose. If we lose this fight, we lose the essence of our existence as a nation.”
He expressed concern over the detrimental impact of corruption on Nigeria’s development and international reputation. “The sad aspect is that people take what they don’t need from generation to generation and dump it. We are now a laughing stock to some countries where we dump our money, and such cities are so beautiful while Nigeria is suffering,” Ajaero lamented.
In a rallying call, Ajaero affirmed the NLC’s unwavering support for the anti-corruption efforts. “My brothers and sisters, I wish to pledge the support of the NLC any time, any day, any moment. We must come together to fight corruption before it ruins the country,” he stated.
