On Wednesday, Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), denounced the killings in the South-East related to the group’s secessionist agitation. He also called for an out-of-court settlement regarding his ongoing treason trial with the Federal Government.

Kanu, who has been detained since 2021 after his re-arrest in Kenya and subsequent repatriation to Nigeria, made this appeal during his trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja. A viral video from Wednesday captured Kanu condemning the violence and emphasizing IPOB’s non-violent principles.

In court, Kanu, through his lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, informed Justice Binta Nyako and the prosecuting counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), of his desire for an out-of-court settlement. Ejimakor also raised concerns about the Department of State Services (DSS) not fully complying with court orders, particularly regarding private meetings with Kanu.

Ejimakor suggested the court invoke Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act, which provides for reconciliation and amicable settlement in legal matters. However, Awomolo indicated that such negotiations should be directed to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), who holds the authority for such decisions.

Justice Nyako advised Kanu to approach the AGF and ordered the DSS to provide an unbugged meeting space for Kanu and his lawyers. She also dismissed Kanu’s fresh application challenging the court’s jurisdiction over the charges against him.

Meanwhile, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo sociopolitical group, welcomed Kanu’s call for an out-of-court settlement and his condemnation of violence. Chief Vincent Aham, Deputy Vice-President (South-East) of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, expressed optimism that dialogue with the Federal Government would lead to Kanu’s release, which he believes would help reduce tension and insecurity in the region.
