Aloy Ejimakor, lead lawyer to the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has accused police officers of deploying teargas to disperse protesters gathered in Abuja on Monday.

Ejimakor, who was present at the protest outside the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, shared on X that the police fired teargas into the crowd during the #MNKOct20 demonstration. He reported experiencing irritation in his eyes and throat as a result.

“I’m in front of Transcorp Hilton with a mammoth crowd that gathered for #MNKOct20 and the police just exploded teargas. My eyes and throat hurt. They’re scattering everywhere,” he wrote.

The demonstration was organized by Kanu’s supporters demanding his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), where he has been held since June 2021. The rally forms part of ongoing efforts to urge the Federal Government to honor court orders for Kanu’s release.
