NUJ Urges Journalists to Steer Clear of Fake News Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged reporters in the state to refrain from collaborating with politicians in disseminating false and unverified information.

This advisory was issued in a statement following the union’s monthly congress on Wednesday.

The statement, crafted by Comrade Abiodun Atilola (Chairman), Comrade Mosunmola Akinola (Secretary), and Comrade Dayo Adu (Member), was shared with Nigeria News 247 by the union’s Secretary, Olusola Oladapo.

In light of the upcoming 2027 elections, the NUJ emphasized the importance of journalists verifying information provided by political figures.

The union cautioned that failing to do so could lead to journalists becoming entangled in a network of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.

The statement read, “The congress recognized the surge in political activities leading up to the 2027 general elections and urged journalists to consistently fact-check information from politicians to avoid being ensnared in fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.”
