Omoluabi Group Alleges Plot to assassinate Aregbesola, Calls for Urgent Intervention
The Omoluabi Progressives, a socio-political group, has raised concerns over what it describes as a coordinated campaign to silence the former Minister of Interior and ex-Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson and organising secretary, Oluwaseun Abosede, and made available to Nigeria News 247 on Sunday, the group alleged that recent events point to both political and physical threats targeted at Aregbesola.
According to the statement, a combination of inflammatory rhetoric, veiled threats, and what it described as “state-backed actions” suggest a broader agenda aimed at eliminating the former minister.
“These developments raise genuine fears that a sinister agenda is being orchestrated to silence him permanently under the guise of politics,” the group claimed.
Referencing a July 23, 2025, rally, the group pointed to a comment by Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Igboho, who allegedly declared in Yoruba, “Ilẹ o mú wọn” (translated as “the land will consume them”), which the group believes was a veiled threat directed at Aregbesola.
The Omoluabi Progressives also cited an August 2 social media post by journalist Mayor Akinpelu, which read, “No man could repay good with evil and get away with it.” The group noted that the post, which was shared by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, implied a warning with potential consequences for Aregbesola.
Tensions reportedly escalated further on August 14 when journalist Gbonka Ebiri allegedly labeled Aregbesola a “sell-out” and urged that he be made to face the “wrath of Yorubaland.”
On the same day, the group alleged that an African Democratic Congress (ADC) rally in Sagamu, Ogun State—scheduled to be addressed by Aregbesola in support of House of Representatives bye-election candidate Hon. Solomon Oluwaseyi Osho—was disrupted by police operatives using an Armoured Personnel Carrier. The venue was allegedly vandalized, equipment seized, and Aregbesola prevented from attending.
According to the group, police efforts to dismiss the incident only fueled further suspicion of political motives behind the disruption.
Describing the pattern of events as “the anatomy of assassination politics,” Omoluabi Progressives called for immediate action to protect Aregbesola’s life and political rights.
The group expressed solidarity with the Coalition of Oodua Self-Determination Groups, whose chairman, Dayo Ogunlana, condemned the threats and emphasized that Yoruba politics must not descend into violence and intimidation.
Highlighting Aregbesola’s contributions, including his reconciliation efforts within the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and developmental strides in both Osun and Lagos States, the statement stressed that he had committed no wrongdoing by charting an independent political course.
It warned against further escalation of threats, stating: “Any attempt to harm Aregbesola will be strongly resisted. His safety, dignity, and constitutional rights must not be sacrificed on the altar of political opportunism.”
The group also urged Nigerians to pay close attention to remarks made by allies and appointees of President Bola Tinubu, while calling on security agencies to act decisively to prevent any breach of peace in Yorubaland. “Any further escalation of threats could endanger Aregbesola and destabilize the region,” the statement concluded.
