President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Aloy Ejimakor, lead counsel to detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has stated that only President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has the authority to halt his client’s prolonged trial.

In a post on his official X account on Monday, Ejimakor said the president could end the prosecution if he truly desired to resolve the matter.

“As it stands, it lies with President Tinubu to free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu because once the President halts the prosecution, the trial ends,” he wrote. “In other words, the buck stops at the President’s table.”

Ejimakor, however, acknowledged the role of the judiciary in ensuring justice, adding, “Nonetheless, the courts can step in to stem the tide of injustice.”

His remarks coincided with peaceful protests by pro-Biafra supporters across the Southeast and Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, demanding Kanu’s release from the Department of State Services (DSS), where he has been held since June 2021.
