Osun Assembly Passes Bills on Marriage Registration and Water Management
The Osun State House of Assembly has passed two key bills — the Osun State Islamic and Traditional Marriages (Registration) Bill, 2025, and the Osun State Water Users’ Association (Irrigation) Bill, 2025 — aimed at strengthening social institutions and boosting agricultural development across the state.
The development was announced in a statement signed by Olamide Tiamiyu, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the House, Adewale Egbedun. According to the statement, the bills were passed following the presentation and consideration of reports by House Committees, as well as a clause-by-clause review and adoption during plenary at the Assembly Complex in Osogbo, presided over by the Speaker.
The Islamic and Traditional Marriages (Registration) Bill, sponsored by Lawal Bamidele Rasheed, provides a legal framework for the recognition, documentation, and protection of marriages conducted under Islamic and traditional rites in Osun State.
“This legislation upholds our cultural and religious values while ensuring that all marriages within Osun State are properly recognised and protected under the law,” the statement read.
The second bill, the Osun State Water Users’ Association (Irrigation) Bill, an Executive Bill, seeks to establish a legal and institutional framework for creating and managing Water Users’ Associations (WUAs) to oversee irrigation systems throughout the state.
According to the statement, “The new law will empower farmers and rural communities to sustainably manage irrigation infrastructure, improve water distribution efficiency, and enhance crop yields and food security.”
The Assembly further disclosed that clean copies of both bills will be prepared and forwarded to Governor Ademola Adeleke for his assent.
