Police will set up full drone system to tackle insecurity, says Egbetokun

During a lecture at the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Studies, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun announced plans for the Nigeria Police Force to implement a comprehensive drone system to tackle the nation’s security issues.

The lecture, titled The Nigeria Police Force and the Management of Internal Security, was held at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan in Oyo state on Monday.

NAN reported that the Inspector General of Police announced plans to enhance the existing drone capabilities by establishing a comprehensive drone system based in Abuja to monitor all areas of Nigeria.

Egbetokun highlighted that this advanced system will assist law enforcement in identifying criminals at crime scenes and bring order to previously uncontrolled areas.

Additionally, the IGP revealed intentions to deploy a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) across all states in the country to combat kidnapping, banditry, and various criminal activities.

Egbetokun emphasized that the implementation of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) in Abuja has proven effective, resulting in the apprehension of numerous kidnappers and bandits.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) highlighted the establishment of specialized anti-kidnapping teams in different states to enhance intelligence collection efforts.

Egbetokun further mentioned that these units have effectively carried out multiple rescue missions and arrests of criminals involved in kidnapping cases.

The IGP acknowledged that the police force encounters obstacles such as manpower shortages, inadequate equipment, public distrust, and insufficient budget allocations.

He expressed that the force is dedicated to safeguarding the lives and property of citizens. Meanwhile, Kayode Adewale, the vice-chancellor of UI, praised the IGP for his forward-thinking leadership in addressing the security issues facing the country.
