President Tinubu Honors Ogoni Martyrs in Moving Tribute
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to promoting dialogue, reconciliation, and healing among the diverse ethnic groups that make up Nigeria.
In a special message marking the 2024 Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day, President Tinubu expressed solidarity with the National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) and all Ogoni citizens as they pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in defense of the Ogoni nation’s rights and interests.
This year’s commemoration, themed “After Price, Comes Prise”, underscores a collective commitment to acknowledging past pains and the lessons learned, as the nation strives for a more promising future.
“We honor their memory by recognizing the sacrifices made and reaffirming our resolve to build a future defined by peace, justice, and sustainable development for all communities, particularly those in the Niger Delta,” President Tinubu declared.
The President emphasized that his administration is committed to addressing historical grievances and working towards the creation of a united and prosperous nation for future generations. This vision, he stressed, will be realized through constructive dialogue, mutual respect, and inclusive engagement.
Oil was first discovered commercially in Oloibiri, Ogoniland, in 1958. The Ogoni people’s subsequent struggle to protect their environment from destructive oil exploration practices was met with severe repression, culminating in the 1995 execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders.
“As we remember the Ogoni Martyrs, let us honor their legacy by committing to a future where such injustices will never be allowed again, and where the voices of all Nigerians are heard and respected,” President Tinubu concluded.
