“Repatriate Stolen Funds to Boost Nigeria’s Economy”, Agabi Tells Nigerians
Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Senator Kanu Agabi, is calling on Nigerians who’ve stashed money abroad to bring it back home and help boost the country’s economy. He believes some political leaders have hidden cash in foreign lands and that returning these funds, regardless of how they were obtained, could be a game-changer.
Agabi suggests investing these repatriated funds in critical sectors like Education, Power, and Infrastructure could put Nigeria on the path to self-reliance and reduce corruption. However, he acknowledges that corruption can’t be eradicated overnight and will require time and effort.
The issue of corruption is a longstanding problem in Nigeria, with the country ranking 145 out of 180 countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index . To combat this, Agabi emphasizes the need for leadership to take action, as leadership issues have been a major hindrance to the fight against corruption.
It’s worth noting that Nigeria has laws and institutions in place to tackle corruption, but their effectiveness has been hindered by factors like duplication of duties and lapses in some laws . Perhaps Agabi’s call to action will mark a turning point in the country’s fight against corruption.
